Sydney’s Inner West is a busy, vibrant area with a rich multicultural mix and a sensational restaurant and cafe scene. Its lifestyle and liveability make it a dream area for renters, as does its wide range of affordable rental properties.
The suburbs of the Inner West are diverse – from leafy Drummoyne which boasts prime waterside apartment living to historic Annandale with its grand Victorian houses and terraces. The area changes character as you travel west from the foodie and artsy havens of Leichhardt and Newtown to suburbs like Croydon, with its green spaces and enviable location near Canada Bay and the Parramatta River.
The area is home to both Sydney University in Camperdown and the Australian Catholic University campus in Strathfield. It has public, private, selective and performing arts high schools, as well as a large concentration of libraries and community and sports facilities.
Happily, the Inner West offers ideal properties for a wide spectrum of would-be renters – from single-bedroom accommodation for students and singles through to multi-bedroom units and houses for professionals, families and downsizers.
Professionals, executives and academics are drawn to the area for its close proximity to the CBD, the universities and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
And if you have a canine companion (or two) you should know that the Inner West is home to some of Sydney’s original dog-friendly parks and cafes and is still a front runner in “fur-family-friendly” policies and venues.
Residents are spoiled for choice with things to see and do. There are performing arts and live music, farmers’ and makers’ markets and an eclectic range of both mall and strip shopping.
The Inner West also has the lion’s share of Sydney’s famous “Eat Streets” and food destinations, including King Street in Newtown, Glebe’s Harold Park Tramsheds, “Little Italy” in Norton Street, Leichhardt and Marrickville Road’s “Little Vietnam”. The area also comes alive after dark with pubs, bars and venues like the iconic Enmore Theatre, which is one of Sydney’s oldest and longest running live theatres.
Despite the constant buzz, it’s entirely possible to find the perfect patch of serenity in the Inner West’s many parks and open spaces. Glebe’s iconic Foreshore Parks – the Jubilee, Federal, Blackwattle Bay and Bicentennial – offer beautiful vistas and lots of space to walk, jog and cycle. Other popular outdoor spots are the picture-perfect Rodd Point Park overlooking the Parramatta River and picnic-friendly Pioneer Memorial Park in Leichhardt.
The Inner West’s closeness to Sydney’s CBD is a huge drawcard and the public transport options are many. Sydney Buses criss-cross the area, there are several major railway stations and you can travel the Inner West Light Rail between Dulwich Hill and Central Station. The Parramatta River Ferry service passes through Balmain and Drummoyne on its way to the city and regular ferry services are also available between Circular Quay and Balmain East or Thames Street Wharves.
Future road and transport improvements are set to increase its status as a major transport-hub, with local and state governments working on a Parramatta Road renewal project and additional light rail corridor to the city.
The Inner West also prides itself on promoting inclusive and environmentally friendly modes of transport and it’s one of the few areas of Sydney that offers genuine options for its residents to safely and comfortably cycle or walk to work.
