If you’re looking for charming village-style living in Sydney’s Inner West, Annandale has it in spades with its tree-lined streets, heritage houses and quaint terraces. It’s a super-quick commute to Sydney’s CBD, making it one of the most sought after suburbs in the area and a great place to rent in.
Get excellent coffee at Cornersmith or Revolver cafes and settle in for a meal at exotic Fez or at Booth Street Bistro with its trademark rustic European food. Shop for art, plants, homewares and fashion at local shopping institutions like Annandale Galleries, Jim & Jane and the Annandale Garden Centre.
Annandale has a rich history – you can spot gargoyles and other weird and wonderful architectural features on a stroll past The Abbey (a 19th century mansion built by one of Annandale’s earliest residents) and the row of gothic “witches houses” on Johnston Street.
The area is dotted with parks, and is also a short walk or bike ride from the expansive open spaces around the Glebe Foreshore.
Annandale has a mix of older two and three-bedroom terrace-style houses and semis which would suit mature renters and families, plus a range of newer single-bedroom apartment complexes and townhouse units, catering for single, younger or more mobile renters.
Current average costs for renting in Annandale are $950pw for three-bedroom houses and $600pw for two-bedroom units.
It’s easy to explore the neighbourhood on foot and for most residents the restaurants, cafes, shops and schools are within easy walking distance. Many of the streets (like Johnston Street) are wider than in other Inner West suburbs, making driving and parking a tad easier.
The suburb is 5km from the CBD and buses run from Booth Street and Parramatta Road to the city. The Inner West Light Rail also has a couple of stops – Jubilee Park and Rozelle Bay – that can be accessed from Annandale.
