Rozelle is an Inner West suburb that lies between Balmain to the north, White Bay to the east and Lilyfield to the west, and is a mere 4km from Sydney’s CBD. Once considered a less glamorous cousin of Balmain, Rozelle has moved up in the ranks and is increasingly in demand for its own charm and unique attractions.
The Victoria Road and Darling Street intersection is at the centre of Rozelle and is where most retail and services can be found. Traditional English and Irish pubs, restaurants offering different international cuisines, galleries, bookshops and gourmet food outlets are concentrated here. It’s a shopping destination where you’ll find everything from organic avocados to Aboriginal art!
The famous Rozelle Markets draw crowds each Saturday and Sunday, creating a lively buzz and providing a fabulous venue for a weekend outing and coffee catch-up. It’s one of Sydney’s premier antique and second hand markets with bargain hunters coming from far and wide to browse the range of treasures and trinkets on offer. The Orange Grove Public School in neighbouring Lilyfield hosts a Farmers’ Market renowned for its spectacular selection of fresh produce.
Rozelle is busy and buzzy but is also home to some great parks with both kid and dog-friendly spaces where you can relax and unwind. King George and Bridgewater Parks are two fabulous foreshore parks near the Iron Cove Bridge bordering on parts of the scenic Bay Run track. Easton Park lies to the south of the suburb.
Rozelle has a blend of workers’ cottages, Victorian and Federation era terraces and architecturally designed homes. Most are single storey properties with a narrow footprint but there are a handful of double storey houses on larger blocks. Some streets to the north of the suburb offer water views.
A more affordable choice for renters than some other Inner West neighbourhoods like Balmain and Drummoyne, Rozelle has become pricier in recent years due to gentrification and its sought after position close to the CBD.
Current average rents in Rozelle are $900 pw for a three-bedroom house and $720 pw for a two-bedroom unit.
Victoria Road has frequent bus services into the city with dedicated bus lanes making the trip quicker, even during peak hour traffic.
There’s a Sydney Light Rail stop at Rozelle Bay on the border of Rozelle and Annandale which provides a connection to the city and to The Sydney Fish Markets, Star City Casino, Darling Harbour and Chinatown.
At peak times, Victoria Road can be chaotic and slow for motorists, but it offers convenient access to the city and the North Shore/ North Sydney business district.
There’s a real mix of residents in Rozelle from those who’ve called the suburb home for decades to new families, young professionals and singles in search of a great inner city lifestyle.
As a place to rent Rozelle, offers lots of opportunities from compact properties for professional couples and downsizers through to homes with 3 or more bedrooms for families requiring more space.
Rozelle is in the public schools for Rozelle Public School and Sydney Secondary College Balmain and Blackwattle Bay Campuses. Independent schools include the Inner Sydney Montessori School (K-12) in Smith Street Rozelle and the International Grammar School at nearby Ultimo. Rozelle is also well located for access to a range of other private schools in the CBD and Inner West.
