Maroubra may be a bit less hip and happening than some of its close neighbours like Bondi and Bronte, but has loads of laid back appeal to make up for it.
The suburb lies 10km southeast of Sydney’s CBD, and is located alongside a kilometre long bay with an impressive surfing beach that attracts lots of Eastern Suburbs locals looking for an invigorating surf or swim.
A diverse mix of nationalities make up the area. Italian and Greek families settled generations ago and there’s a sizeable French community as well. More recently, immigrants from across Asia have made Maroubra home and at the same time established some of the suburb’s exceptional eateries.
Pacific Plaza Shopping Centre just off Anzac Parade at Maroubra Junction, has several supermarkets and fresh food retailers where residents can stock up on necessities and then relax over a meal or coffee at one of the restaurants and cafes. A range of other specialty shops, medical, dental and service businesses are in the surrounding streets, and the huge Westfield Shopping Centre in nearby Eastgardens is home to a host of other big brand retail outlets.
Apart from the main strip of beach, other places to enjoy the water include Mahon Pool, a popular oceanside saltwater swimming pool and the recently renovated aquatic centre at Heffron Park. Nearby Heffron Pedal Park is a unique playground with cycleways and working traffic lights where kids can practice bike and scooter skills.
Maroubra (and neighbouring suburbs to the south) have lots of newcomer residents in search of a more affordable corner of the east and somewhere they can live or rent close to the beach without the huge price tag.
The suburb has a high proportion of apartment-style living, from units in older buildings dating from the 60s through to contemporary apartments and townhouses. There are also a large number of freestanding family homes that range from Federation-style bungalows to ultra-modern architect designed houses, many close to or overlooking the beach.
Current average rents in Maroubra are $1300pw for a three-bedroom house and $700pw for a two-bedroom unit.
Anzac Parade is the main artery running through Maroubra from La Perouse in the south to inner city Moore Park. It’s the main corridor for bus services from Maroubra to the transport interchange at Bondi Junction and through to the CBD.
The journey to Martin Place by bus is roughly 35 minutes, and there’s also the option of connecting to light rail at Kensington or to train services at Bondi Junction.
The suburb is in the public schools catchment area for Maroubra Bay and Maroubra Junction Public Schools and South Sydney High School.
Independent schools include St Mary – St Joseph Catholic Primary School; Mt Sinai College; St Spyridon College; Champagnat Catholic College; the bilingual Lycée Condorcet de Sydney (French School); The Bowen College and Aspect South East Sydney School.
