Located to the east and south east of Sydney’s CBD, the Eastern Suburbs is made up of harbour, ocean and inner-city suburbs in the local government areas of City of Sydney, Woollahra, Waverley and Randwick.
The area’s shops, restaurants, cafes and bars are among the finest in the country, and the beaches and harbourside spots attract Sydneysiders from far and wide.
Despite its upscale and enviable lifestyle, the Eastern Suburbs is also very diverse. Uber-chic Vaucluse, Point Piper, Double Bay and Woollahra stand in contrast to the more relaxed beachside suburbs like iconic Bondi, beautiful Bronte and friendly Coogee, with their melting pot of residents, nationalities and age groups.
Along the southern stretch of the Eastern Suburbs, from Kensington, Kingsford and Maroubra to La Perouse, the personality of the area changes even further. Here you’ll find suburbs defined by a mix of family-friendly residential properties set in bustling local shopping and business centres.
Eastern Suburbs properties range from luxe listings-style harbourside mansions to affordable homes in all shapes and sizes. Rental options are equally as diverse, and there’s a lot to suit families, professional couples, singles and downsizers alike.
The harbourside suburbs of the east have a range of larger homes with a more expansive footprint, but there’s also apartment living, often with great views. Most eastern beachside suburbs have a mixture of apartment, semi and freestanding homes.
Families are attracted to the Eastern Suburbs for its high concentration of premier (public and independent) schools, and there’s also a world-class tertiary campus at The University of NSW.
Centennial and Queens Parks, as well as a variety of smaller parks and reserves, provide havens for family (and “fur baby”) fun and exercise.
Taking a dip in the surf doesn’t have to involve battling crowds and competing for parking spots at the major beaches. There are so many smaller swimming spots to enjoy, from picturesque Redleaf Pool to the pint-sized and dog-friendly Kutti beach.
Along the Bondi to Bronte Walk you can catch the annual (and now world-famous) Sculptures By The Sea exhibition. Bondi Beach Markets offers amazing designer and foodie treats each weekend. Get fish and chips at Rose Bay Wharf while watching the seaplanes take off and then hop on a ferry to Circular Quay.
Explore historic Waverley Cemetery, or go rollerblading, horse riding or picnicking in Centennial Park. Catch a cricket match at the SCG or have a flutter on the horses at Randwick Racecourse.
For the retail obsessed, make a day of it with a shopping trip to Westfield Bondi Junction with its range of designer label shops. Or you could hop over to elegant Double Bay, settle in with a coffee and croissant and watch the passing parade from a cafe.
The transport interchange at Bondi Junction acts as a hub for Eastern Suburbs train and bus services to the CBD and around Sydney. The train service along the Eastern Suburbs line is an efficient way to get to work in the city and there are also several express bus services which make the trip easier.
Recently expanded transport options include the L2 Randwick Line on the Sydney Light Rail Network, which runs from Randwick to Central Station.
The Harbour Bridge and Tunnel, Cross-City Tunnel and East/West Distributors connect the Eastern Suburbs to other areas of Sydney by road.
